Toddler dies in tow truck accident
Southlake police officers investigated the death of a 15-month toddler who was run over by a tow truck shortly before noon April 27, 2007. Cpl. Mike Bedrich, of the Southlake Department of Public Safety, said the 911 call came in at 11:30 a.m. and was reported as an auto/pedestrian accident. “From our initial investigation and talking to witnesses, we have learned that the little girl’s adult caretaker had called a tow truck to change a flat tire on her vehicle,” Bedrich said. “After the tire was changed, there was apparently still an issue with the tire. After the tow truck driver and the care taker finished their business, the driver got in his truck and backed out. It was at this time the child was struck.” According to reports, the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident occurred at the parents’ home on Canterbury Court in Southlake. Lt. Rhonda Moore, of the Southlake DPS, said both parents were at work at the time of the accident. Moore also said the department had brought in an accident reconstruction team to aid in the investigation of the accident. Moore said the child’s death appeared to be “just a tragic accident.” She noted that neighbors who lived on the cul-de-sac were a close knit group and were devastated by the accident.

Kenner teen arrested in accident that injured four
A Kenner teen was arrested Thursday in connection with an auto accident that injured four other teenagers – one of them who remains in critical condition. According to Kenner Police spokesman Brian McGregor, an investigation into the accident showed that 18-year-old James Shafer of Metairie was driving a Dodge Neon in the 2200 block of Williams Blvd. on Dec. 30 when he began swerving from ‘lane to lane’ and driving playfully in dangerous conditions. McGregor said the roads were wet and heavy rains were falling, which may have led to Shafer losing control of the car, which then struck a light pole. Shafer was charged with four counts of negligent injury, three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and reckless operation of a motor vehicle. Four people were injured in the crash. The back seat passenger a 13 year old female juvenile from Houma was critically injured. The 13-year-old has a skull fracture and remains in critical condition at University Hospital. A 16 year old male juvenile (rear passenger) from Kenner suffered a concussion. He was treated and released from East Jefferson Hospital. A 14 year old female juvenile, from St. Rose, who was sitting on the lap of the front seat passenger, received a dislocated shoulder and elbow. In addition her jaw was broken in two places. She remains hospitalized at East Jefferson Hospital. A 17 year old male (front passenger) from Kenner, received 3 stitches in his upper lip, a fractured right cheek bone, and 4 stitches to the back of his head. He was treated and released from Ochsner Kenner.

New law gives Montanan's more options following a car accident
Montanans can now choose their own auto repair shop after an accident. A new law that went into effect at the start of the year states companies selling car insurance can not choose where car owners go for a damage estimate. State Auditor, John Morrison, says the new law gives Montanan's more options. "Before that law it was necessary for a person who owned a car that had been in a wreck to sometimes go to a body shop that the insurance company picked for them. Sometimes they didn't have a choice of which body shop to go to. Now they have that choice." Insurance companies still have the right to an independent appraisal after the car owner receives their own estimate. To make sure ever entity was in compliance with the new law, the State Auditor's office recently sent a notice to the insurance industry as a reminder of Montanan's rights.
Friends, family of accident victim are grief-stricken
Some tragedies seem more senseless than others. That’s what friends and a former coach are saying about 18-year-old Kylie Pinheiro’s death in an auto accident caused by an allegedly drunken driver on Route 1 near Black Horse Road on Friday. ”You never think something like this can happen so fast,” said John Harding, who coached Ms. Pinheiro for four years on the South Brunswick High School varsity swim team. “She was just a super kid.” Ms. Pinheiro, a college student home for break, was riding in the front passenger seat of a car being driven by her cousin, Heather Pinheiro, 20, when the crash occurred at about 3 a.m. Heather’s sister, Melissa Pinheiro, 21, was riding in the back. Heather and Melissa Pinheiro were listed in serious condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital on Wednesday, according to police. The Pinheiros’ car was struck on the passenger side as they were crossing Route 1, police said. The driver of the other car, Kimberly Green, 32, of Somerset, allegedly was intoxicated and ran a red light, police said. Ms. Green has been charged with aggravated manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault. Ms. Pinheiro was a freshman at High Point University in North Carolina, She graduated from South Brunswick High School in 2007 and lived in Dayton her entire life. Her friends and family described her as warm and caring. ”She was probably the most wonderful person that I ever knew,” her best friend Yesenia Boynton said. Ms. Boynton, a freshman at the University of Delaware, grew up with Ms. Pinheiro and graduated from high school with her last year. ”She was a free spirit, and she lived every day,” Ms. Boynton said. “She loved to have fun, and she never judged anyone. She was just so easy to get along with.” Ms. Boynton remembers Ms. Pinheiro for being able to “brighten up any room.” ”Her laugh was priceless,” she said. “Kylie was truly an angel.” A certified volunteer for Big Brothers-Big Sisters of America, Ms. Pinheiro was also a certified lifeguard, and a varsity swimmer. Mr. Harding says that she was a positive influence on her teammates. ”She had a great personality, you could always count on her to help out, and she worked well with the kids on the team,” Mr. Harding said. “She was that kind of kid.” He says Ms. Pinheiro’s death has shaken many of the kids on his team, and that he is still in a state of shock. Funeral services for Ms. Pinheiro will be held today (Thursday) beginning at 9 a.m. at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home on Rhode Hall Road in Monroe, with a 10 a.m. liturgy at Saint Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church, on Kingston Lane in Monmouth Junction. Interment is at Holy Cross Burial Park on Cranbury Road in South Brunswick. An only child, Ms. Pinheiro is survived by her parents, Scott and Deborah Pinheiro of Dayton, and her paternal grandparents, Arlene and George Pinheiro of Clinton. Memorial donations can be made to Camp Quality New Jersey Inc. P.O Box 264, Adelphia, N.J. 07710, or The Sharing Network, 841 Mountain Ave. Springfield, N.J. 07081.

Tougher to Reject Auto Insurance Applicants It will be tougher for non-life insurance companies in Korea to reject applications for automobile insurance. According to non-life insurance businesses on Jan. 4, Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service send notification letters to insurance companies on Jan. 2 informing them of the new regulation that requires them to accept all auto insurance applications, excluding exceptional cases, such as those with more than three accidents over the past three years, or those with a record of insurance fraud. Until now, some insurance companies have rejected applications which have not had an accident for a length of time. The companies argue that despite extending the “no-accident” period from seven years in 2006 to nine years for 2008, these accounts bring in small profits due to large discount rates under which the fees are discounted up to 60%. Currently, these auto insurance applicants have had to subscribe additional instruments or insurances that require extra fees as part of the conditions for approval. There have also been complaints that insurance companies rejected insurance applications for drivers living in areas where accidents are frequent, drivers of expensive imported vehicles, and teenage drivers. The Financial Supervisory Service plan to enforce the regulation by placing sanctions on executives of the companies or warning companies in violation. Insurance companies are also required to provide an explanation as to why an applicant with a history of accidents is rejected. Meanwhile the Korean Non-Life Insurance Association will establish a consulting center beginning Jan. 4 to help answer questions related to automobile insurance and to receive complaints by rejected applicants. Officer still gets his man, despite traffic accident Man believed to have stabbed another apprehended Georgia Wingate Thompson, The Kingsville Journal After a Kingsville Police Officer wrecked his patrol unit, a passing motorist was instrumental in aiding in the apprehension of a person suspected in a stabbing on the city's north side last week. According to a police department press release, Officer Humberto Gonzalez was in front of Kleberg School on North Sixth Street when he heard the call to be on the look-out for a man in a white Grand Prix leaving the area of 1100 W. Corral. While responding to a call that the vehicle was spotted at the intersection of Sixth Street and Santa Gertrudis Avenue, Gonzalez's unit collided with a vehicle, hit a street sign, retaining pipe along the sidewalk and traveled into a school's front yard. After checking to see if the occupant in the other vehicle was O.K., Gonzalez flagged down a passing motorist to drive him to 200 E. Richard St. where the suspect vehicle had been stopped. According to the police report, the name of the helpful motorist was unknown. At the traffic stop, the suspect exited the Grand Prix and was chased on foot by Cpl. Ted Figueroa. Sgt. Brad Lile, as well as Gonzalez, managed to apprehend Andres Rodriguez, 25, who had run between two buildings near the north alley of 200 E. Richard. Rodriguez was incarcerated at the Kleberg County Jail and charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony. He was also served with warrants from the State of California for robbery and kidnapping. The State of California has agreed to extradite Rodriguez for their warrants. The stabbing victim was transported to Spohn Kleberg Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a puncture wound to the right elbow area and released. Gonzalez was transported to the hospital to be checked and later returned to duty. The unnamed driver of the other vehicle involved in the auto accident refused treatment at the scene. As per departmental policy, a review of the auto accident will occur and administrative action taken if necessary in conjunction with the accident. State Troopers investigate cause of deadly auto accident Flags mark off the area on U.S. 280 where a vehicle left the roadway and flipped multiple times, injuring three and claiming the lives of two passengers early Sunday morning. Alabama State Troopers said they have no new information in the case, but an investigation into the cause and details of the single-car wreck is still under way. The flags outline where the 2002 Dodge Intrepid left the highway and where it eventually came to a stop just past a Nissan car dealership on the eastbound side of 280, west of Sylacauga. “I don’t know how many times it flipped, but it was a bunch,” said Oak Grove Fire Chief Leon Dale. Dale said there haven’t been too many wrecks at the site, perhaps one several years ago, but that’s all. He said his department and the other emergency responders had a hard time finding the wreck at first. “It was pouring down rain that morning, and we had a hard time spotting it at first,” he said. The accident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. between Sylacauga and Oak Grove. Ashley Regina Danelutt, 24, of Sylacauga and Alree Henderson, 36, of Lineville were the two women who were reportedly thrown from the vehicle and fatally injured in the crash. Talladega County Coroner Jerry Castleberry said Monday that Danelutt was killed instantly and pronounced dead at the scene. Henderson was taken to Coosa Valley Medical Center, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Shainah Wood, 21, of Sylacauga was also taken to Coosa Valley Medical Center, where she was treated and released Monday. Jessica Jones, 24, of Sylacauga was transported to University Hospital in Birmingham, where hospital spokeswoman Kristen Ruggeri said she remains in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle, Tracy Thomas, 30, of Lineville was also taken to University. According to Dale, Thomas was pinned in the car shouting for help when the response teams arrived. Oak Grove and Sylacauga fire departments had to cut him from the wreckage. Ruggeri said Thomas is still at University, and is in good condition. State troopers said more information should be available in the next week.
